The Hancock Quill, Obituary for Robert B. Hetrick, about November 29, 1914
. GOOD CITIZEN AND BRAVE SOLDIER
Was Robert B. Hetrick, Whose Death Occurred at Soldiers' Home Last Monday - Long Time Resident Here.
Robert B. Hetrick was born March 23 1836, in the city of Philadelphia Pa., and died in Quincy, Ill., Monday Nov. 23. 194, aged 78 years 8 months and 1 day.
He was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, and was married to Sarah A. Funk of that city October 30, 1857. He spent his early manhood there, learning the tinsmith's trade and following the same until 1860, when he and his wife emigrated to La Harpe, stopping at first with Mrs. Hetrick's parents on their homstead 2 1/2 miles southeast of La Harpe, and known yet as the old Funk farm. His wife preceeded him to her Heavenly reward December 17, 1908, and he leaves one son, Robert J., and two grandsons. Leroy and Harold all of Denver, Colo., to morn his loss.
Mr. Hetrick was an honored old soldier and served with distinction during the Civil War. At the government's call for volunteers he was one of the first to respond, and enlisted in Co. F, 50th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, which was organized at Quincy, September 10 1861; he served three years and eighteen months. He was with General Grant at Ft. Henry, Ft. Donnelson, Clarksville, Nashville, Shilo, and siege of Corinth; he was also at Liuville; Lookout Mountain, Chatanooga, Atlanta, Snake Creek Gap, Re.... Lays' Ferry, Kingston and Rome, Ga. He bore the record of being a brave soldier, a good comrade, and a just officer. He was promoted from the ranks to Post Foragemaster while at Rome, Ga., and at the expiration of enlistment he was detailed as a military necessity as General Superintendent of Quartermaster Department. Being relieved from further service he returned home to civil life July 12, 1865. Having earned them, he was rewarded by the government giving him two honorable discharges, on from the Volunteer Department and one from the Quartermaster Department.
He has been more or less prominently identified with the business life of La Harpe since 1860, commencing in the restaurant business at that time in what was then the Todd building, where he continued until 1870. He then farmed for several years, when he again moved to town and opened up in the grocery business in 1881, which he continued until 1890. Shortly after this he established a broom manufactory in La Harpe, which he continued for about three years, when age and ill health forced him to retire from further responsibilities and business cares.
Being a man of good judgment and learning, he was frequently called upon to act as assignee and guardian in settling up the affairs of others; he was also Deputy Sheriff of Hancock County during the years of 1882 and 1883, which office he filled with honor to himself and credit to his superiors.
He possessed an individuality that won the confidence of all, and his honor and integrity was the foundation of a character that was never questioned; he was eccentric and of strong personality; he was true to his friends and just to his enemies; his moral life was above reproach; his heart was tender and his sympathies were always with the poor, and during his business life there is many a charitable act to his credit, done in a quiet way, that gave him a sacred place in the hearts of others not so fortunate as himself. To owe no man an honest dollar and do the best he could by everyone was a religion he believed in and practiced faithfully during his long residence among us.
Almost three years ago the entered the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home at Quincy and there remained to the close of his life. His health had gradually failed for many months.
The funeral services were held at the Christian church in La Harpe, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Elder B. E. Yontz officiating. Burial in LaHarpe cemetery.

Rev. T. H. Ball, Genealogy and Biography of Lake County, Indiana, with a compendium of History 1834-1904 (Rev. T. H. Ball, of Crown Point, Editor in Chief Illustrated, Chicago, New York, The Lewis Publishing Company, 1904),
"In professional circles Dr. John F. Take has won a position of prominence that is an indication of his skill, close application, determined purpose and laudable ambition. He is largely a self-educated as well as a self-made man, and he has exerted his efforts in a calling where advancement depends entirely upon individual merit. Not by gift, by purchase or by influence can it be secured. A physician's labors must stand the test of practical work, and favorable public opinion is won only as he demonstrates his power to successfully cope with the intricate problems continually presented by disease. That Dr. Take is now enjoying a large practice is indicative of his thorough understanding of the principles of the science of medicine and his correctness of their application to the needs of suffering humanity.
Numbered among the native sons of Illinois, Dr. Take was born in Fountain Green, Hancock county, on the 6th of April, 1864. His father, Charles Take, was a native of Germany and came to America when twenty-one years of age, hoping that he might have better business opportunities in the new world than were afforded him in his native country. A farmer by occupation, he devoted his entire life to that calling in order to provide for his family, but he died at a comparatively early age. His wife bore the maiden name of Mary Church and was a native of Indiana. They were the parents of three children, two sons and a daughter, but the latter died in infancy and the brother of Dr. Take is known as Robert Hetrick, having been adopted by the Hetrick family of Laharpe, Illinois, when but three years of age, his father having died. He is now a merchant of Denver, Colorado, and is a journalist by profession.
Dr. Take, the eldest of the three children, was only six years of age at the time of his father's death. He afterward lived with a family by the name of Hopper until eleven years of age, and during that time was a resident of Hancock county, Illinois. His mother then removed to Rockford, Michigan, and Dr. Take resided with her there until eighteen years of age, during which time he attended the common schools and also assisted in the work of the home farm. Later he went to North Dakota, where he spent one year, and subsequently removed to Lamars, Iowa, where he attended high school for two years. By earnest labor he gained the money necessary to defray his college expenses. Desirous of becoming a member of the medical fraternity he pursued a course in reading under Dr. Prosser, of Lamars, Iowa, for a year, and next went to Chicago in the fall of 1887. There he entered the Bennett Medical College and was graduated from that institution with the class of 1889. In the fall of the same year he matriculated in the Chicago Homeopathic College and was graduated in the spring of 1890. On the 15th of April, of the same year, Dr. Take located for practice in Whiting, opening an office on Front street. He was the first physician to locate here and he has been in constant practice in the town since that time, building up an extensive practice which has constantly grown in volume and importance. He has made a specialty of the diseases of children and is particularly proficient along that line. Dr. Take is a member of the Eclectic Medical and Surgical Society of Chicago, and he is a student who is constantly promoting his efficiency through reading and investigation. He discharges the duties of his profession with a sense of conscientious obligation, and his ability has long been proved by the excellent results which attend his efforts.
In November, 1887, Dr. Take was united in marriage to Miss Mary Isabel Haines, of Rockford, Michigan, who was born in that city and is a daughter of Moses Dayton Haines, whose birth occurred in Dutchess county, New York. Her mother bore the maiden name of Jane Wilkinson, and was also a native of Dutchess county. In their family were eight children, three sons and five daughters, of whom Mrs. Take is the sixth child and fifth daughter. Her birth occurred July 8, 1866, and she was reared in Rockford, Michigan, attending the public schools there and afterward becoming a student in St. Mary's Academy. To the Doctor and his wife have been born two children: Lena Frances, who was born June 15, 1889, at 3636 Fifth avenue, in Chicago; and Milton Jay, at 304 One Hundred and Nineteenth street in Whiting, Indiana, on the 10th of May, 1892.
Dr. Take has been a life-long Republican and has served Whiting as a member of the town board of health, but aside from this has had no political aspirations. He is a self-educated as well as self-made man, having earned the money which enabled him to pursue his college course. The history of mankind is replete with illustrations of the fact that it is only under the pressure of adversity and the stimulus of opposition that the best and strongest in man are brought out and developed, and the life record of Dr. Take is another proof of this statement. In private life he has gained that warm personal regard which arises from true nobility of character, deference for the opinions of others, kindness and geniality."

St. Anne's Cemetery (Section 2, Range 2, Lot 84).
The front of the deed dated July 22, 1866 indicates that Alexander Deeney of Toronto Street purchased Section 2, Range 2, Lot Number 84 for Twenty dollars. The deed is signed by Thomas Kieraw, Treasurer.
On the back there is a notation from Thomas Kieraw stating "This lot was transferred to Mr. Alexander Deeney by his son in law Owen Pryor, December 4, 1874".
Based on records from St. Ann's, Own Pryor owned Lot Number 83 in July of 1866. There was a Thomas Pryor buried in that lot on August 13, same year.
Alexander Deeney owned lot 84. There was a Bernard Deeney buried in this plot on April 11, 1906.
It is likely that William H. Hetrick acquired this lot sometime about 1889 for the burial of Hesther, then Rose and John Hetrick. Then used by William J. Hetrick for this burial.
